Blur celebrate the 10th anniversary of comeback album The Magic Whip with a special edition vinyl release, featuring new cover artwork by original designer Tony Hung. A reimagining of the iconic ice cream cover with added gold foil and embossed details, the new format is presented in a gatefold sleeve and available as a half-speed mastered, single gold disc and we have a copy to give away to one lucky winner.
The Magic Whip is Blur's eighth studio album and includes the fan favourites 'Ghost Ship', 'Go Out', 'Lonesome Street', and 'Ong Ong'. The influence of Hong Kong and East Asia is woven throughout the album; Damon Albarn later described the album as a “reflection of feeling lost in a technological city”, a sentiment explored on tracks like 'Thought I Was a Spaceman'.
Critics were more than kind to The Magic Whip, lauded as a bold return and an album that felt both fresh and comfortably Blur. Pitchfork called it “the most sonically adventurous Blur album since 13” and praised its “mournful, noirish beauty.” NME gave it 9/10 and hailed it as “a masterpiece of low-key emotion.”
“Melancholy, reflective and riddled with doubt, but often beautiful” - The Guardian on The Magic Whip
Stephen Street, the longtime Blur producer, had not worked with the band since 1997’s Blur. His return for The Magic Whip contributed in capturing the balance between nostalgia and innovation that has kept the record's release in the hearts of the fans.
