Manchester art-rock princes Everything Everything release their artificial intelligence-enhanced new album Raw Data Feel today. To celebrate the release, we've got one copy of the limited edition pink vinyl version of the album, complete with an art print signed by the band!
Everything Everything have taken a step into the future and used A.I. to help them write a number of the songs on Raw Data Feel. They created a programme using “the entire terms and conditions of LinkedIn, the ancient epic poem Beowulf, 400,000 4Chan forum posts and the teachings of Confucius,” according to an official statement - the result has helped to form the album’s lyrics, artwork and aesthetic. The single first taken from the new album was the enchanting 'Bad Friday'. Explaining the meaning behind the single and its accompanying video, frontman Jonathan Higgs said: “We wanted the video to have a monochrome Ink Spots classicism to it, disrupted by elements of A.I.-generated imagery. This reflects the approach to writing and producing the song – the minimalistic combined with the surreal and disorientating.”
“('Bad Friday') is about being a victim of violence, explaining it away through the gauze of a ‘crazy night out’." - Jonathan Higgs
The most recent preview of Raw Data Feel came in the form of 'Pizza Boy', complete with a celebratory live video. Speaking about the meaning behind the song, Everything Everything explained in a statement: “The song is about recovering from trauma, by focussing on both hedonism and solitude.”
While much discussion has been generated about the forward-thinking concept of the record, NME's glowing four-star album review was careful to affirm that the beat of the music retains a human pulse: "The band want to “revolutionise modern pop music” with a robot writing their lyrics – but the glistening instrumentation proves the focus here". The Skinny cut to the heart of the matter in another four-star appraisal: "It’s deepfaked pop."
The album is available now from the Everything Everything Official Store on EXCLUSIVE Yellow Vinyl, Clear Vinyl, CD, Cassette and even a Flash Drive version. There is also a range of Raw Data Feel merchandise, including tees, long-sleeves and caps available as part of specially-priced bundles, plus the new Everything Everything lyric book Caps Lock On out now.
